Edmonton Oilers coach Knoblauch gives bad-news Hyman injury update

The Edmonton Oilers have changed their tune from positive to negative in just over 24 hours when it comes to Zach Hyman.

On Wednesday, it seemed like nobody was worried about Hyman’s nagging wrist injury. Oilers GM Stan Bowman gave a glowing assessment of the situation while Hyman himself seemed to be in high spirits.

That all changed on Thursday as Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch said that the veteran forward is expected to miss all of October with the injury. He mentioned that Hyman will be aiming to rejoin the team on Nov. 1, meaning he will not only miss all of training camp but also the first 12 games of the regular season.

“Zach, unfortunately, won’t be able to join us for our home opener,” Knoblauch said. “We’re thinking the guideline is probably around Nov. 1. Maybe a little earlier, maybe a little bit later, but around that timeline.”

It seems like something was discovered in Hyman’s medicals on Wednesday to push back his return date. Based on what he said on day one of training camp, it felt like Hyman wasn’t ruling out that he could be ready to hit the ice for the team’s season opener on Oct. 8.

Now, it looks as though the Oilers will have to find someone to take over his spot on the first line for at least the first month of the new season.

Hyman suffered a fractured wrist in Game 4 of the Western Conference Final after an awkward collision with Dallas Stars forward Mason Marchment. He underwent surgery to repair the wrist over the summer and was seen in a brace just last month at Team Canada’s Olympic camp.

It’s not exactly clear who the Oilers will look to replace Hyman on McDavid’s wing. They had overseas signing David Tomasek in that spot during the first on-ice session of training camp.
