Edmonton Oilers forward Zach Hyman was still sporting a wrist brace while at Canada’s orientation camp in preparation for the 2026 Olympics.
The 33-year-old suffered a fractured wrist in the Western Conference Final versus the Dallas Stars. He underwent immediate surgery, which not only kept him sidelined for the Stanley Cup Final but also had the potential to hold him out in the early going of the 2025-26 campaign.
Although Hyman continues to wear a wrist brace, it’s expected to come off right away, and the Oilers’ rugged winger sounded quite optimistic when speaking to Paige Martin, stating that he’s making good progress in his recovery.
“It’s been good,” Hyman said. “Rehab’s long and tedious, but I had surgery, was in a cast for two months, now I’m in this one. I’m almost out of it, which is nice, can get back to some normalcy soon.
While he seems to be in good spirits, Hyman wouldn’t give any specifics when it comes to a potential return date.
“I’ve gotta see what the docs say when I get back. It’s kind of on their timeline, but it shouldn’t be too much longer.”

Losing Hyman was a massive blow for the Oilers, as he was putting together a very strong postseason. While his five goals and 11 points were to be expected, he became a physical force, leading all NHL players with 111 hits despite playing only 15 games. It was a massive surprise given that he’d recorded just 59 hits through his 73 regular-season outings in 2024-25.
Hyman will be hoping to get cleared right away, as he’s going to need to put together a strong start to the 2025-26 campaign to have a shot at earning a spot on Canada’s Olympic roster. His struggles to begin the 2024-25 season resulted in him being cut from the 4 Nations Face-Off squad.
The Oilers are set to begin camp in September, while their 2025-26 regular season gets underway on Oct. 8 in a home outing versus the Calgary Flames.
