New Edmonton Oilers player grew up a fan and has the picture to prove it

Colton Dach seems over the moon to be joining the Edmonton Oilers organization.

The 23-year-old was acquired by the Oilers alongside Jason Dickinson from the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday. Heading the other way was Andrew Mangiapane and a 2027 first-round pick.

The trade checks some boxes for the Oilers. In Dickinson, they were able to add a responsible, shutdown centreman. Dach, meanwhile, gives them a physical presence in the bottom six, while also adding some youth to the lineup at just 23 years old.

It serves as a homecoming of sorts for Dach, who grew up in St. Albert and played minor hockey in both Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan. Shortly after the trade became official, he shared an old photo of himself in an Oilers jersey while skating at Rexall Place.

“Thank you to the Chicago Blackhawks and Blackhawks fans for making my life long dream come true. Forever grateful,” Dach wrote on Instagram. “Excited to come home and get to work.”

In what is his first full season as an NHLer, Dach has registered three goals and nine points in 53 games. Dickinson, who scored a career-high 22 goals in 2023-24, has six goals and 13 points through 47 games this season.

This was the second trade the Oilers completed with the Blackhawks this week, as they also brought in defenceman Connor Murphy.

Though things can change, GM Stan Bowman informed reporters on Thursday that he was likely done making upgrades to his roster. Any other move made would be a money-in, money-out situation, as the Oilers have just $475,000 in cap space.
