A massive new TV series is about to kick off filming in Alberta, with shooting set to occur in Calgary and its surrounding area.

Season one of The Magnificent Seven is set to start shooting on Thursday, June 4, according to ACTRA Alberta’s list of what’s shooting in the province. Filming will run until Tuesday, Sept. 22.

The new Alberta-shot series is set to star The Outsiders and Crash actor Matt Dillon, according to MGM+ Studios.

The series will be a reimagining of the classic 1960 Western film. Dillon, who is also serving as an executive producer, will play Chris Adams, the role originally portrayed by Yul Brynner.

“Stoic, steady under pressure, and with an unflinching gaze that does most of the talking for him, Chris has no patience for hypocrisy or cruelty and holds fast to a quiet moral code rooted in fairness and restraint,” the description of the character states.

The show synopsis reads, “Set in the tumultuous 1880s American frontier, The Magnificent Seven follows seven gifted but flawed mercenaries hired to protect a peaceful Quaker village after it is massacred by mercenaries working for a ruthless land baron trying to seize their land.”

While we know when the TV series will start filming in Alberta, it’s not known how many episodes will be made for its first season, or when it will start airing.

The Magnificent Seven is joining a growing list of recent productions shot in Alberta. Other projects include a movie starring Gossip Girl actress Leighton Meester, a new Netflix series based on a popular book, and a new Netflix adaptation of a Guillermo del Toro short story.
