McDavid and Draisaitl think Edmonton Oilers third jerseys are bringing 'good luck'

There is something to be said about the Edmonton Oilers’ new alternate jerseys this season.

After Tuesday night’s 5-1 drubbing of the Calgary Flames, the Oilers are now a perfect 4-0-0 while wearing the uniform this year and have outscored opponents by a ridiculous 26-10 margin.

Every single time Edmonton dons the cream-coloured uniform, they simply dominate the opponent. Connor McDavid was able to put up an incredible five points in uniform against Calgary, while Leon Draisaitl notched his ninth career hat trick in the victory.

When asked about the jerseys after the game, Draisaitl said he was a fan.

“I love them, I love the look of them,” Draisaitl said. “Obviously, our record and our stats are pretty good in them right now, so hopefully we can keep that up.”

This is a bit of a turn in fate for the Oilers to do so well in an alternate uniform. Back during the 2022-23 season, the team went a pitiful 1-2-2 while wearing the McFarlane-era Reverse Retro uniforms.

It’s come to a point where a lot of fans are now wondering if the Oilers should adopt this jersey as the official away-game uniform once the playoffs come around.

McDavid had a little less to say about the jersey, but did agree that the look seems to be helping them do something right.

“They’ve brought us a little bit of good luck,” McDavid said.

Not everyone on the team was convinced about the new design when it was officially unveiled before the season.

Head coach Kris Knoblauch was among those doubters, perhaps because of the unique coach tracksuits that go along with it, but he admitted to the media that the team’s record has helped him come around.

“I wasn’t too excited about them at first, but they’re wearing on me,” Knoblauch said with a smirk. “I’m enjoying them now, as long as we can keep winning.”

The Oilers will wear the jersey just three more times this season. The next two matchups will come on the road against the Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators on Jan. 12 and 13.

Edmonton fans will say goodbye to the look this season with one last home date scheduled for Jan. 31 against the Minnesota Wild.
