Connor McDavid may be playing the best hockey of his career right now.
The Edmonton Oilers captain has been absolutely torching the rest of the NHL over the past month or so. His scoring streak reached 16 games after netting a hat trick on Tuesday night, bringing the point total of the streak up to a ludicrous 39 points.
McDavid is now locked in a fierce battle for the league’s scoring title with Colorado Avalanche superstar Nathan MacKinnon. The margin is just a single point, with McDavid sitting at 75 while MacKinnon is right behind him with 74.
Moreover, this may be the deadliest stretch of hockey that McDavid has played since entering the NHL during the 2015-16 season. The Oilers superstar is no stranger to long point streaks, having recorded streaks of 12 or more points on 11 separate occasions before this one.
None of those streaks has been as productive as the one he’s currently on. The closest he came to reaching 39 points in 16 games was during the 2022-23 season, when he recorded 37 points on a 17-game point streak.
That means that this active stretch is the most points McDavid has ever recorded on a point streak in his entire career.
McDavid is on the most productive points streak of his career with 39 points in 16 games….

McDavid seems to have rediscovered his scoring touch in a big way this season. Last season felt like a bit of a step back from his usual standards, as he netted just 26 goals and 100 points. That was his lowest point total since the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season that saw him nab 97 points in 64 games.
He has already surpassed last year’s goal totals with 28 through 43 games this season and is on pace to score 53 goals and 143 points, both of which would be the second-highest of his career.
There were moments last season where some doubted that McDavid could find a new level to his game. The glory of the 153-point 2022-23 campaign seemed like a distant memory for a lot of fans.
Yet, the Oilers captain has proven once again that you should never bet against McDavid.
