Connor McDavid has signed an extension with the Edmonton Oilers, and all is right in the Alberta capital.

Excitement for the upcoming NHL season has been stifled in recent weeks as Oilers fans were nervous about the future of their captain. McDavid’s being unsigned cast a shadow over the team until it was finally announced that he had inked a two-year extension with Edmonton.

As expected, the news of his contract extension has garnered a massive reaction from the hockey world, ranging from fans, fellow Oilers teammates, and even some of the most prominent Canadian politicians.

There may not be anyone more prominent reacting to the news than Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who tweeted out his relief at the news.

“Crisis Averted,” the Prime Minister sent out after the news broke.

Carney is famously an Oilers fan, having previously commented on McDavid’s contract status last month in a funny moment. He was not the only politician to send a social media note on the new deal.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also put in a word, commenting on the Oilers captain for taking a team-friendly deal.

“Talk about taking one for the team… Thank you Connor,” Smith sent out on social media.

Smith has been the Alberta premier since 2022 and has cheered on the Oilers in each of their last three playoff runs.

Bringing things back to the rink, there have also been a few reactions from McDavid’s teammates on the deal. Oilers GM Stan Bowman revealed that he was able to chat with a few players in the moments after the deal was reached, including Jake Walman, all of whom were shocked that McDavid took such a discount to stay in Edmonton.

Kasperi Kapanen, however, might have put it best, as he shared the news on his Instagram story with a fitting caption.

“Thank. God.” Kapanen wrote.

The Oilers fanbase also used the moment to release all the pent-up anxiety that had accumulated over the last few months. It’s an overwhelmingly positive sentiment being heard from the Edmonton faithful, who largely view McDavid as taking a hometown discount to help the Oilers build a Stanley Cup champion.

A lot were ecstatic to see McDavid put the team first, exemplifying his leadership and desire to win with the Oilers.

“This deal puts the team first. The most captain move to make. I’m happy with this,” said one fan.

“12.5 HAHAH THAT’S MY CAPTAIN,” said another.

Another part of the fanbase used this as an opportunity to taunt Toronto Maple Leafs fans who had joked about McDavid leaving the Oilers to come to his hometown team.

“Well, it looks like the Leafs fans were right. McDavid is heading to Toronto. On December 1,3 to play the Leafs,” said one fan.

“Leafs fans running around yelling that Connor McDavid shouldn’t have stayed in Edmonton if he wanted to win. Yeah, because Toronto has been so close recently,” said another fan.

It might have been a stressful journey to get to this point, but with the new season just two days away, Oilers fans can start to get excited about the action ON the ice.
