Truck thief fires rifle in the air before being Tasered by officers: police

Vegreville RCMP has arrested a 21-year-old man after a report of a stolen truck in the town of Vegreville, Alberta, an hour outside of Edmonton.

On January 19, 2020, at approximately 8:13 pm, police say they were alerted to a report of the stolen truck, and a short pursuit ensued.

During the chase, law enforcement reportedly deployed a tire deflation device, and the truck got stuck in a ditch near Highway 16A.

According to a release, the lone male occupant got out of the vehicle with a rifle and shot once into the air. An officer deployed a Taser, and the man was subsequently taken into custody.

A knife along with a stolen bow with arrows and the rifle used were allegedly seized on scene.

Police say the truck was reported stolen from Mervin, Saskatchewan, earlier the same day.

The suspect, a 21-year-old man of Sturgeon Lake First Nation, SK, was charged with 16 Criminal Code offences.

Vegreville is an hour and ten minutes outside of Edmonton.
