Major changes are coming to a number of Edmonton streets, with the City of Edmonton investing $7.1 million to improve transit speed and reliability.

The funding, approved as part of the 2023-2026 Capital Budget, will support planning, designing, and implementing transit priority measures along several major corridors, according to a memo to City Council.

“Transit priority measures help to make transit faster and more reliable, reducing the time people need to travel and improving the efficiency of transit service by reducing the number of service hours required to complete trips,” the memo reads.

Locations identified for the changes include:

● Jasper Avenue (95th Street to 109th Street)
● 101st Street (Kingsway to Jasper Avenue)
● 97th Avenue (105th Street to 109th Street)
● 97th Street (107th Avenue to 118th Avenue)
● Hewes Way (23rd Avenue to 28th Avenue)
● 118th Avenue at 80th Street
● Whyte Avenue (109th Street to 99th Street)

All corridors are set to see signal timing changes to improve traffic flow. Additionally, Whyte Avenue, Jasper Avenue, and 97th Street will undergo intersection and lane modifications, with the latter also set to see parking restrictions.

Queue jumps will be added to 97th Avenue and Jasper Avenue, while 101st Street will receive a dedicated transit lane.

The concept phase was completed in 2024, which confirmed transit issues and developed measures for each corridor.

Design for traffic signal-related measures for the 97th Street and 118th Avenue corridors is underway and is anticipated to be implemented in the first quarter of 2025.

Implementation of the remaining measures will be completed later in 2025 and 2026.
