An Edmonton bookstore just made a list of the world’s favourites
An Edmonton bookstore has landed on a list of some of the world’s best bookstores.
Magpie Books in Ritchie was named by subscribers to The Economist‘s weekly Plot Twist newsletter, alongside bookstores including Powell’s Books in Portland, Clarke’s Bookshop in Cape Town, South Africa, Charlie Byrne’s in Galway, Ireland, and Luna Books in Hyderabad, India.
Magpie Books is a small, independent bookstore with a curated selection that prioritizes literature written by Indigenous, Black, racialized, queer, and trans authors. It’s also a charming little spot, with artwork featuring its namesake throughout the shop.

It carries everything from fiction and nonfiction to books for young readers, cookbooks, poetry and more. Magpie also hosts events, including a monthly book club, naloxone training, and pop-up events.

The bookstore is structured as a workers’ co-operative, with employees and shareholders making the same hourly wage, and decisions are made collectively.
It’s also one of our favourite locally owned bookstores in Edmonton, and it’s easy to see why. Magpie gets plenty of praise for its curated selection and knowledgeable, friendly staff, two of the hallmarks The Economist says make for a quality bookstore.
