A main piece of the Edmonton Oilers’ offence appears to be closing in on a return to the lineup.
The Oilers have been decimated by injuries in the early stages of the 2026-27 campaign. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Matt Savoie, and Mattias Janmark have yet to make their season debuts, while Jason Dickinson suited up for the first time on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Zach Hyman has played just once, appearing in the Oilers’ season opener against the Vancouver Canucks. He’s been sidelined since with an undisclosed injury, but may not be held out much longer.
Hyman returned to practice with his teammates on Friday morning, marking his first time skating with the group since being sidelined.

Despite all the injuries, the Oilers have gotten off to a strong start. They have yet to lose in regulation and sit second in the Pacific Division with seven points.
Things could get even better once Hyman returns. That’s a scary thought for the rest of the league, especially considering the Oilers are averaging 5.50 goals per game so far this season.
The 34-year-old remained productive in 2025-26, recording 31 goals and 21 assists in just 58 games. His ability to find open space around the net and finish scoring chances has made him an important part of Edmonton’s offence, particularly on the power play.
Hyman’s first opportunity to return to the lineup will come Saturday, when the Oilers take on the San Jose Sharks in an afternoon matchup. If he isn’t ready to go, his next chance will come Wednesday against the Los Angeles Kings.
Getting Hyman back would give Edmonton another proven goal scorer as they look to continue their strong start. With several other forwards still working their way back from injuries, his return could also provide some much-needed flexibility for head coach Mike Babcock as the Oilers look to keep rolling.
