The notorious 'Jameson Pit' in downtown Edmonton is for sale

A notorious hole in the ground in central Edmonton has become an unlikely attraction, racking up dozens of cheeky five-star Google Maps reviews, and now a for-sale sign has appeared on the property.

Located at 10211 121 St. NW, “The Jameson Pit” is labeled as a historical landmark on Google Maps and has hit the market for $4 million.

For those who haven’t been following the saga, the Jameson Pit was originally supposed to be a 22-storey condo development. Construction on the tower, to be called The Jameson, began in September 2021, but work stalled shortly after the property was excavated and shored, leaving behind a massive hole in the ground.

The property, in its sought-after location across the street from Paul Kane Park and the Oliver Exchange building, has sat empty ever since.

It received renewed attention in May when Instagram account @edmontonpittour began hilariously chronicling and even offering tours of the various stalled developments and plots of vacant land scattered across Edmonton.

It garnered even more attention over the summer, when record-breaking rainfall filled the pit with water, creating prime real estate for local flora and fauna.

Parts of the pit’s aging shoring began to collapse over the course of the unusually rainy summer, causing sections of the surrounding ground to give way. The affected areas were later stabilized and reinforced with sand.

Now, the property is on the market.

According to a listing from Jones Lang LaSalle Real Estate Services (JLL), the 18,061-square-foot property is being marketed as a shovel-ready, high-rise development in Wîhkwêntôwin.

Existing approved development plans for The Jameson already allow for a 22-storey mixed-use tower with 185 residential units, approximately 2,200 square feet of ground-floor retail space, and 2,600 square feet of building amenities. With one major building obstacle already out of the way (digging a hole), it would allow its next owner to fast-track construction in a highly desirable neighbourhood.

“The Site presents an excellent opportunity for a developer to acquire a high-density development in one of Edmonton’s best infill locations,” the listing states.

So, it appears the Jameson Pit may finally be on its way to becoming something other than a pit. But we have to wonder: will there be a plaque or some kind of tribute to its time as a tourist attraction? Only time will tell.
