Built in 1911 for pioneer Strathcona pharmacist Hugh Duncan, the designated Municipal Historic Resource has been a landmark in the neighbourhood for well over a century.
Duncan operated a pharmacy on Whyte Avenue until his death in 1935.
The two-and-a-half-storey Edwardian Foursquare home has kept plenty of its original character, including its red brick exterior, cedar shake bellcast roof, curved dormers, and a full-length front veranda. It was recognized as a heritage resource in 2005.

A rear driveway provides parking for up to four vehicles.
According to the property’s heritage designation, the Hugh Duncan Residence is valued for its association with early Strathcona residents who were representative of the type of entrepreneurial and professional families that began to populate the city of Strathcona early in the twentieth century.

As soon as you walk through the front doors, you’re greeted by that staircase and a warm, inviting foyer. Just to the right, French doors lead into the parlour.

Even though it’s being used as office space, it’s not hard to visualize how cozy and elegant a space it is.

The updated kitchen is spacious, with plenty of counter space and a window overlooking the garden. We also love the exposed brick where an old stove would have once sat.

The warm wood panelling continues up the staircase to the second level, where you’ll find more spacious rooms and access to the rear balcony.

Then there’s the top level, which offers even more space and plenty of windows. We could easily see this becoming a pretty stellar library or reading room.
