Edmonton's August long weekend forecast is looking a little more promising

After weeks of heavy rain and thunderstorms, Edmonton’s Heritage Day long weekend forecast is looking to be a little more settled than what we’ve grown used to this summer.

We’ve seen more than our fair share of showers, storms, and severe weather alerts, and now the forecast for this coming Heritage Day weekend is finally looking a little bit more promising, even though rain is still expected to make an appearance.

According to Jennifer Kowal, an operational meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the city was expected to see a stretch of warmer, drier weather heading into the weekend, though there was still uncertainty about whether another system moving in from B.C. would bring rain back to central Alberta.

Kowal explained that a system moving across northern Alberta would bring drier conditions for Thursday and Friday before another weather system arrived over the weekend. While she was still uncertain during the interview about how far south the rain would extend, the latest forecast now calls for showers on Sunday, followed by cooler temperatures into the start of next week.

Saturday is expected to be the warmest day of the long weekend at around 30°C. Showers are currently in the forecast for Sunday before temperatures cool heading into Monday and Tuesday.

“We’ll see a pretty significant shift in the temperature,” Kowal said.

After all of the severe weather we’ve experienced this summer, Kowal says it’s still important to keep an eye on the forecast if you plan to spend time outdoors this weekend.

“When thunder roars, go indoors,” Kowal said. “Make sure that you have somewhere that you can shelter yourself when you’re doing any sort of outdoor recreation in the summer in Canada.”
