Ex-Edmonton Oilers star Taylor Hall shouts out McDavid after winning Stanley Cup

It was a long road for Taylor Hall.

Sixteen seasons after being drafted first overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2010 NHL Draft, Hall finally won his first Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes over the weekend. It was a tense Game 6 battle with the Vegas Golden Knights, but it was Hall who scored the Cup-clinching goal in a 3-0 victory.

It was a cathartic moment not only for Hall and his family, but also for all the Oilers fans who watched him grow up in Edmonton between 2010 and 2016. Before Connor McDavid arrived, it was Hall who was the face of the franchise.

Even though he couldn’t deliver a Stanley Cup for the Oilers, many fans were happy to see him do it elsewhere.

It doesn’t appear that Hall has forgotten his time with the Oilers, despite moving on to greener pastures with the Hurricanes. It’s been a long, winding path for the 34-year-old, as he has had stints with the New Jersey Devils, Arizona Coyotes, Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins, and Chicago Blackhawks before eventually arriving in Carolina.

Through all that, he still made some time to shout out his former roommate, McDavid, during the celebration. Sportsnet’s Gene Principe revealed what he said about the Oilers captain on social media.

If there is anyone who deserves to win the Stanley Cup, it’s [McDavid],” Hall said of McDavid.Ā

Hall spent six seasons with the Oilers, scoring 132 goals and 328 points in 381 games in the Alberta capital. For years, he was seen as an untouchable piece of an Edmonton squad trying to dig itself out of a playoff drought.

He spent just one season with the Oilers during the McDavid era, before being moved to the New Jersey Devils in an infamous one-for-one trade in the summer of 2016 in exchange for defenceman Adam Larsson. Edmonton would go on to qualify for the playoffs that following season for the first time since the 2005-06 season.

Hall had success with the Devils, winning the 2018 Hart Trophy. However, he had become something of a journeyman in recent years, having played for five different teams since 2020.

Though he hasn’t worn an Oilers uniform for a decade, many Edmonton fans still have a soft spot for Hall.
