Gross weather hits Alberta today with risk of icy roads and 100 km/h wind gusts
It’s a gross Friday morning for a large portion of Alberta today, with the risk of freezing rain and strong wind gusts in the forecast.
Freezing rain warnings and wind warnings were issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) for a wide swath of Alberta, with the federal weather agency noting that the freezing rain will move into Saskatchewan, tapering off as we roll into the evening hours.

Forecasters added that roads and walkways will likely become icy and slippery, and to be very careful if walking or driving. Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.
Areas under the freezing rain warning, as of writing, include Edmonton, Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Fort Saskatchewan, Leduc, Spruce Grove, Fort McMurray, Whitecourt, and Camrose.
Strong winds with gusts up to 100 km/h are also expected, in some areas of the province, with winds weakening late this afternoon into this evening. Driving conditions will likely be difficult, and motorists are cautioned to prepare to adapt their driving to changing conditions.
Areas under the wind warning include Calgary, Cardston, Diamond Valley, Okotoks, and Pincher Creek.
