Edmonton has countless off-leash areas where your dog can run free without dragging you around, and with spring on the way, what better time than now to get outdoors?
Itās not just your pup who benefits, either. Getting outside and chatting with other dog owners can be a pretty great boost for people, too.
From sprawling river valley parks to convenient downtown runs, here are seven of our favourite off-leash areas to check out around Edmonton this spring.
Terwillegar Off-Leash Area
We love the wide-open spaces for dogs to roam and trails to play in the woods in the Terwillegar Off-Leash Area. Terwillegar Park is a gorgeous and worthwhile visit for pets and people alike. With plenty of easy access to the river, it’s also a fantastic place for your pups to take a dip once that first balmy day arrives.

Hermitage Park Off-Leash Area
Located in the city’s northeast, Hermitage Park is a great escape from the city to take your dog for a walk in a natural area. There’s plenty of wildlife to be seen around the wetlands area of the park, and plenty of trails and access to the river make this a prime spot to soak up the sun.
Address: 2115 Hermitage Rd. NW

Lauderdale Dog Park
This small but mighty dog park is often described as one of the busiest parks in Edmonton, serving a massive number of communities in north Edmonton. Lauderdale Park is fully enclosed, with a separate area for the smaller pups.

O-day’min Dog Park
Located within the brand-new downtown park, the O-day’min Dog Park is part of a growing number of off-leash options for pet owners in Edmonton’s downtown core. Plenty of seating space within the double-gated park makes this the perfect place to meet up for a puppy play date.

Buena Vista Park Off-Leash Area
This beautiful and expansive park along the river in south Edmonton has plenty of trails and trees to explore with your pup. It’s also an excellent place for a swim in the summertime!

Deermound Off-Leash Park
Deermound in Sherwood Park is another one of the best spots around. It’s a wide-open space, making it the perfect place to throw the ball. In addition to the main area, there’s also a smaller, fenced area that is great for small and shy dogs.
Address: 23031 Township Rd. 522, Sherwood Park

Mill Creek Ravine North Off-Leash Area
This park is great for many reasons, but its off-leash area is basically one giant trail system with plenty of trees and shrubs for your dog to run around in and explore. Later in spring and into summer, the shallow waters of the Mill Creek Ravine also offer a fantastic place for your pooch to splash around and cool off.
Address: 75th Avenue and 89th Street NW

Looking for a spring day out with your dog, but want to stick closer to home? The City of Edmonton has a handy map that shows even more off-leash parks around Edmonton.
And while we might be dreaming about warmer waters, it’s still early in the season. If you’re heading out to the parks, keep an eye on your dog and keep them away from any frozen bodies of water for now, as ice thickness can be deceiving and weak spots can give way without much warning.
