Alberta has produced some pretty great musical talent. Not only are these stars Canadian sensations, but they’re also recognized around the world. From country singers to rock and roll legends, these Albertan artists have taken their talent from the prairies to the world stage.

Alberta-born singer and songwriter, Tate McRae, has taken the world by storm with her viral and trendy hits. The star was born in Calgary, and after living in Oman from the ages of four to six, her family returned to Calgary, where she attended school and local competitive dance studios. One of her first shows was performed at the Palace Theatre in Calgary. Some of her hits include “sports car,” “greedy,” “exes,” and even a song paying tribute to her hometown, “calgary.

From Calgary, Paul Brandt is a country singer who rose to fame in the 1990s and has become one of Canada’s most successful country artists. He attended Mount Royal University, majoring in nursing, and was working as a pediatric nurse at the time of his big break. He still has ties to the Calgary area with his foundation, #NotInMyCity, and he is currently the co-chair of the governing board for the Alberta Office to Combat Trafficking in Persons.

Nickelback has easily become one of the staples of rock and roll, and they got their start in the small Alberta town of Hanna playing in a cover band. With hits like “How You Remind Me,” “Animals,” and “Photograph,” the band rose to stardom, selling out arenas and stadiums. Their catchy hooks and commanding rock presence even secured them a spot in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. 

Tegan and Sara 

Tegan and Sara are an iconic twin sister indie-pop duo from Calgary. The duo got their start after winning a Calgary battle of the bands called Garage Warz, which awarded them with studio time where they recorded their first professional demo, “Yellow Tape. Tegan and Sara even filmed a drama series in Calgary based on their memoir, High School.

Brett Kissel

Brett Kissel is a Canadian country singer who was born in St. Paul and grew up in Flat Lake. He is known for his rich vocals and heartfelt songwriting. He released his first independent Album at the age of 12. He has earned multiple Juno Awards and has four number-one hits on the Canadian country chart: “Airwaves,” “Drink About Me,” “A Few Good Stories,” and “Make a Life, “Not A Living.”

Corb Lund is a country and western singer out of Taber. He is well known for his prairie storytelling and sharp lyrics. Over the years, he has built a devoted fan base and released twelve albums, three of which have gone certified gold. He frequently tours Canada, Australia, and the United States.
