Longtime Edmonton Oilers reporter lands new TV gig with Sportsnet
Edmonton Oilers fans will see a familiar face on TV screens this upcoming season.
While the Edmonton faithful have already become well-accustomed to the local Sportsnet crew of Gene Principe, Louie DeBrusk, Jack Michaels, and Mark Spector, another name will start popping up on a more national basis.
Tony Brar left the Oilers organization last month after spending eight years serving as a team reporter and digital content producer. He was well-known by fans for his upbeat personality and was often featured on the team’s official accounts, interviewing players and coaches. He was even a central figure in the team’s pre-game hype videos on the jumbotron before playoff games at Rogers Place.
His departure came as a shock, and there was some question about where he could be going for his next job. That speculation ended on Wednesday afternoon, as Brar shared on social media that he had been hired to be a TV anchor for Sportsnet Central.
“Sportsnet. Toronto. A new chapter awaits. And a childhood dream comes true,” Brar wrote. “I’m unbelievably excited and grateful to be joining this incredible team as an anchor on Sportsnet Central.
“The last eight years shaped me in ways I could’ve never imagined. Now, I look forward to building on it through new challenges, new experiences in a new city, and the opportunity to work alongside some of the very best in the industry.”

Brar studied radio and television at Edmonton’s Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) and worked in a variety of sports-related gigs before joining the Oilers in August 2018. He was promoted to be the team’s lead reporter in 2022 and has been an essential part of the OilersTV video team.
There is no word on who will be coming in to replace Brar for the Oilers. At the moment, the team employs Paige Martin as a reporter and host, as well as Jamie Umbach as a digital content producer.
Edmonton currently has a job posting up for a reporter/producer role and is looking for candidates with extensive experience in sports broadcasting, video work, and camera experience. It’s assumed that whoever gets this role will get the opportunity to fill the large shoes left by Brar.
Working alongside Brar as Sportsnet Central anchors are Jesse Fuchs, Martine Gaillard, Faizal Khamisa, Tim Micallef, Danielle Michaud, Evanka Osmak, and Ken Reid.
