EPS investigating suspicious fire at south Edmonton fitness facility

Edmonton Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in investigating a fire that took place at a fitness facility last month.

According to a release from EPS, “On Saturday, May 16, 2020, at approximately 5 am, Edmonton Fire Rescue (EFR) responded to and extinguished a structure fire at a fitness facility near 41 Avenue and 101 Street.

“Witnesses nearby heard a loud explosion and observed a bright orange flash at the west-facing rear doors of the fitness club, before contacting 911.”

Police have since taken over the investigation, and are seeking assistance from the public.

“Multiple gas jerry cans were discovered on scene by investigators following the blaze,” the release said.

“Police are asking anyone who may have seen someone filling up multiple jerry cans with gasoline purchased between May 13 and May 16, 2020, to contact police.”
