EPS investigating after police weapon discharged at vehicle during traffic stop

Edmonton Police Service are investigation an “officer-involved shooting” that took place just after midnight on Christmas morning.

According to a release, police were attempting to stop a vehicle in the area of 5 Street and 147A Avenue just before 12:30 am on December 25, 2019.

“During the course of these events police members exited their vehicle and one of the officers discharged his service weapon toward the vehicle,” said a release from EPS.

Police did not specify if the vehicle was pulled over or driving away at the time the officer discharged their weapon.

“We’re not able to release any other information at this time,” said an EPS spokesperson in a statement to Daily Hive.

Police say it is unknown if any of the occupants of the vehicle were injured, but police officers remain unharmed.

Police continue to search for the occupants of the vehicle.

“The EPS contacted the Director of Law Enforcement who directed that the investigation remain with EPS at this time. ASIRT has also been notified,” said EPS in a release.
