Edmontonians are no strangers to the volatility of winter weather, and this week appears to be one of those times, with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) forecasting a 32°C change in temperature in just two days early next week.
The city is forecast to warm up gradually over the weekend after this week’s nasty cold spell. Tonight’s low of -24°C will be the coldest point before temperatures rise to a high of 3°C on Monday.
But warm stretch won’t stick around. By Monday night, the mercury could dip back below freezing, with an overnight low of -12°C.
The cold deepens midweek, bottoming out on Wednesday night with a low of -29°C. With Thursday’s high only expected to reach -20°C, there’s a chance temperatures could fall even further.

ECCC
According to ECCC, the average high for Edmonton around this time of year is -5°C, while the average low is -14°C.
The return of frigid weather also brings the risk of snow. Environment and Climate Change Canada says flurries could begin Tuesday, with a 60 per cent chance of snow through the rest of the week. It’s starting to look like Edmonton may be headed for a white Christmas this year!
But with temperatures this extreme, frostbite becomes a risk. Bundle up if you’re spending time outdoors, and consider helping out neighbours who have difficulty clearing their sidewalks.
