Edmonton street performers festival to move online

Edmonton International Street Performers Festival has announced that this year’s festival has been cancelled, but the show will still go on online.

The festival was supposed to take place from July 3 to 12, 2020, but with the government regulations on large gatherings amid the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers made the decision to make the move online, especially given the international nature of the festival’s cast.

The community festival has been going on for 36 years, bringing together and connecting Edmontonians through performance and laughter.

“We all know this is disappointing news. Now more than ever, we need the fun and laughter StreetFest brings,” said Board Chair Jill Wright.

“We are looking at alternate ways to adapt through this challenging time, to continue to connect as a community, and to share the Festival experience.”

Organizers say this year, videos and photos from past festivals, along with online links to new artist shows will be available online, as well as busker tips and tricks, and festival-inspired activities to do at home.

“Remember, with the technology around us, we can continue to stay home and connect through our phones and computers by bringing the Festival from the street to the screen,” said Festival Artistic Producer Shelley Switzer.

“Follow us on social media and stay tuned to our website in the coming weeks for more updates on where to find the laugher. After all, it is the best medicine.”
