Edmonton's underground pedway network is getting an extension

A new underground connection in downtown Edmonton is nearing completion, set to link the LRT system with a growing new development.

The new pedway is located under 99 Street and will connect Churchill LRT Station to the Station Lands development north of 104 Avenue, extending Edmonton’s downtown underground pedway network.

According to the City’s latest update, Ledcor is working on the final electrical, mechanical, and architectural details inside the pedway, including lighting, tiling, ceiling finishes, and signage.

A new elevator is also being installed in the tunnel entrance, while the public art installation is expected to be complete by the end of October.

The project is anticipated to be complete by the end of 2026, according to the update.

Drivers can also expect some construction in the area for the next month or so. In mid-October, crews closed a section of 99 Street north of 102A Avenue to vehicle traffic to install a roadway contraction joint across the street.

The closure is expected to remain in place until late November, weather permitting. Access to the City Hall Parkade will be maintained via 103A Avenue, the City says.

Construction of the pedway began in March 2024.  A major milestone was reached earlier this year when crews completed the tunnel roof, fully connecting all six phases of the underground pedway.

The new link is intended to improve access to downtown destinations while supporting future redevelopment in the area.
