Before their goaltending swap last week, the Edmonton Oilers were said to have major interest in Buffalo Sabres’ Alex Lyon.
The 33-year-old has turned into a dependable NHL goaltender in recent seasons, first beginning with the Florida Panthers during the 2022-23 campaign. He went on to play with the Detroit Red Wings in 2023-24 and 2024-25, before signing a two-year, $3-million deal with the Sabres this past offseason.
Despite picking up Tristan Jarry from the Pittsburgh Penguins last week, there was still chatter that the Oilers may have interest in Lyon as a replacement for Calvin Pickard, who has struggled this season with a 3.91 GAA and a .857 SV% in 12 appearances.
Now, the interest from GM Stan Bowman and his staff may be even higher.
On Thursday night, in just his third start with the Oilers, Tristan Jarry appeared to tweak something while attempting to make a cross-crease save in the second period. It was significant enough for the injury-prone 30-year-old to exit the game.
Head coach Kris Knoblauch offered up little explanation on how serious the injury was postgame, telling reporters he wasn’t yet aware of how much time Jarry could potentially miss.
Though Jarry’s timeline is unknown, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman hinted that the Oilers could be making a call to the Sabres to rediscuss trading for Lyon.
“Edmonton’s spoken about him, they’ve done their research on him. They looked into him again this season,” Friedman said on the latest 32 Thoughts podcast. “They called the Sabres a couple times in recent weeks.
“It comes down to, is Buffalo ready to do this, and it also comes down to how seriously Jarry might be hurt. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Edmonton makes a call to Buffalo on Friday if they hadn’t already.”
Lyon, who carries a $1.5 million cap hit, has a 7-6-3 record with a 2.99 GAA and a .904 SV% this season. Acquiring him would require some roster shuffling, as the Oilers have just $59,167 in cap space as per Puckpedia.
