Edmonton Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner lost a whole bunch of weight this summer

Edmonton Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner is entering training camp at a much lighter weight than a season ago.

The Oilers netminder, set to enter his fourth NHL season, is listed on the training camp roster as weighing 205 pounds. That is 25 pounds less than the 2024-25 campaign, when he was listed at 230 pounds.

“Stuart Skinner looks completely different. He looks quicker, more agile, and, when you see him up close, it’s obvious he’s dropped some weight,” Bob Stauffer of Oilers Now said during a conversation with GM Stan Bowman.

Bowman, who took over as GM of the Oilers ahead of the 2024-25 season, acknowledged Stauffer’s comment when it came to his team’s starting goalie.

“I actually saw Stu earlier this week in the kitchen before going on the ice. The first thing I noticed was he looked thin. I said, ‘Wow, you look different,’” Bowman responded.

Interestingly enough, Skinner explained earlier this offseason that he was going about his business differently this summer. Rather than get on the ice right away as he’d done in previous years, he chose to take some time away from the rink in order to reset.

“I think I got onto the ice a little bit too quick last summer, talking about the experience part again,” Skinner said. “Going into the season, I want to be as fresh as I can, as strong as I can.”

The 26-year-old is doing what he can in what is his biggest NHL season to date. Not only is he playing for a new contract, but this could also be the final shot the Oilers have to compete for a Stanley Cup in the near future, given the uncertainty surrounding Connor McDavid.

The 2024-25 season saw Skinner post a 2.81 goals-against average along with a .896 save percentage in 51 appearances. It will be interesting to see if his stats improve given his significant weight loss over the summer.
