Edmonton Oilers management has liked what they’ve seen from Ty Emberson through his first season with the organization.
The Oilers acquired Emberson in a trade with the San Jose Sharks last summer that saw Cody Ceci head the other way.
Not a ton was known about the 24-year-old, who had logged just 30 career NHL games prior to the deal. Since joining the Oilers, however, he’s been a mainstay on the third pairing, racking up two goals and 13 points through 76 games while averaging just over 15 minutes of ice time. On Saturday afternoon, he was rewarded for his strong season.
The Oilers announced that they have re-signed Emberson to a two-year deal, $2.6 million deal that will carry an average annual value of $1.3 million.
Emberson has been a valuable part of the Oilers’ penalty kill this season, with his total ice time on that unit (149:32) leading all of the back end. He also ranked third amongst all Oilers skaters with 125 hits, trailing only Vasily Podkolzin (211) and Darnell Nurse (161).
This is a nice raise for Emberson, who had signed a one-year, $950,000 deal with the Sharks prior to being traded to the Oilers.
Emberson and the Oilers are beginning to prepare for the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, where they are set to take on the LA Kings for the fourth-straight year. The Oilers have come out on top in all three series to date, but aren’t being viewed as heavy favourites this time around due to a plethora of injuries along with some red-hot play from their opponent as of late.
Game 1 between the Oilers and Kings is set to get underway at Crypto.com Arena on Monday night at 8 p.m. MT.
