The Edmonton Oilers are looking to add to their banged-up forward group.
It’s been a strong start to the season for the Oilers, who own a 2-0-1 record through their first three outings. They’ve been able to get off to that start despite battling the injury bug in the early going.
The Oilers are currently without Zach Hyman, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Matt Savoie, Jason Dickinson, and Mattias Janmark up front. Management doesn’t seem to be panicking over the situation, but they are taking a look at a serviceable forward who may be available.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday that the Oilers are interested in acquiring a forward, and would be open to moving a depth defenceman in what was described as a “lateral trade.”
On Monday morning, Friedman gave an update on the situation and mentioned one specific player to keep an eye on.
“I know they’re looking at someone like a [Michael] Eyssimont,” Friedman said on the latest 32 Thoughts podcast. “Depending on the contract situation, we’d see how they felt. Sometimes I wonder to see if teams wait, if this happens on waivers first, so they know that the player is waiver-eligible.
“I don’t know if Boston would be interested in one of the depth defencemen on the Edmonton roster, but the Oilers would prefer to move one of their depth [defencemen], Spencer Stastney maybe.”
The reason Eyssimont was specifically mentioned is due to the fact that he was placed on waivers by the Boston Bruins Monday morning. The 30-year-old is on the second of a two-year contract which carries a $1.45 million cap hit.
Eyssimont has logged 269 games in his NHL career, including 56 with the Bruins in 2025-26. In his 56 games last season, he registered eight goals and 18 points.
As per Puckpedia, the Oilers have just $761,666 in cap space, meaning they don’t have the space to put in a claim for Eyssimont. If he clears, however, they could look to move Stastney ($1.525 million cap hit) or Ty Emberson ($1.3 million cap hit) should the Bruins have interest in either player.
While fans shouldn’t expect the Oilers to make a big swing at this time, it does sound as though a move for a depth forward could be coming in the very near future.
