Edmonton Oilers get terrible news on Zach Hyman and the injury is worst-case scenario

The Edmonton Oilers are inching ever-closer to a Stanley Cup Final return, but they might have to do it without one key piece.

Zach Hyman, who was injured in Tuesday night’s Game 4 win over the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Final, is out for Game 5, as per Jason Gregor.

In a follow up post later on Wednesday morning, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman shared that Hyman is slated for surgery today and is likely to miss the rest of the playoffs, later confirmed to be wrist surgery by CHEK’s Rick Dhaliwal.

Hyman left Tuesday’s game in the first period. It was an awkward play that happened in the neutral zone as Dallas Stars forward Mason Marchment collided with the Oilers forward.

Hyman immediately dropped his stick and headed down the tunnel to the Edmonton dressing room. He looked to be favouring his right arm or hand/wrist.

At the time of the injury, Hyman was fifth on the team in playoff scoring with five goals and 11 points.

Hyman led the NHL with 16 playoff goals last season and has been a postseason monster since coming over from the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2021-22 season. In four playoff runs with Edmonton, Hyman has played 68 games, scoring 35 goals and adding 25 assists. Only Edmonton teammate Leon Draisaitl has scored more postseason goals over that span, while he’s ninth in total postseason scoring.

The Oilers have their first opportunity to clinch a return to the Stanley Cup Final on Thursday night, when they head back to the American Airlines Center in Dallas. Puck drop for that one is set for 6 p.m. MT/8 p.m. ET.
