Edmonton Oilers' Zach Hyman could break surprising NHL playoff record

Zach Hyman has had another great postseason with the Edmonton Oilers, but it’s not the goals or points that are creating a buzz around the player.

The former Toronto Maple Leafs player has produced great offensively, with five goals and 11 points through 14 games. That is good enough for fifth in playoff scoring for the Oilers, but there is another stat that he is not only leading but is also on the cusp of NHL history.

Hyman has registered a staggering 109 hits throughout the playoffs, which leads the entire NHL, ahead of the second-place Sam Bennett of the Florida Panthers, who has just 78.

For a player who is more known for his scoring and offensive production, Hyman has truly taken his physical game to the next level in the playoffs. Throughout the entire 73 games he played in the regular season, Hyman only had 59 hits in that span. He has almost doubled that total in just 14 postseason games.

Right now, he is averaging a mind-boggling 7.7 hits/per game and is still finding ways to make an impact on the scoresheet. It’s also not too far off the NHL record for most hits made during a single playoff run.

“It’s impressive to watch, it’s amazing to watch, and I get a front row seat to it every night,” McDavid said of Hyman. “He’s a wrecking ball out there right now.”

The record belongs to Blake Coleman, who laid 126 hits in 25 games as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2020 COVID playoffs.

Edmonton currently leads their Western Conference Final series with the Dallas Stars by a 2-1 margin. That means that the series will go to at least six games, giving Hyman a minimum of three more games to get that record.

If he can continue to lay his average of 7.7 hits/per game, he should land at around 130 hits, which is already a new record. Considering how good the Oilers look, there is a real possibility that Hyman could have a whole other series to continue recording these hits.

If Edmonton can advance to the Stanley Cup Final, Hyman won’t only break Coleman’s hit record, he will utterly destroy it.
