Edmonton will play host to one of hockey’s most intense rivalries next year.
The 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy are set to start in February, with hockey being one of the premier sports on both the men’s and women’s sides. Hype is building around the fact that NHL players will participate for the first time since 2014, but the Canadian women are also looking to defend their gold.
The Canadian women’s team has been dominant at the Olympics of late, winning five of the last six gold medals. Yet, the Americans are looking to change that as they have defeated Canada in two of the last three Women’s World Championships, including just this past year.
The hatred between these two teams is evident, and both will be hungry as ever to capture Olympic gold. To get ready for the event, both teams are set to play two Rivalry Series games in Edmonton at Rogers Place on Dec. 10 and 13.

These two games will conclude a four-game series between the two nations, with the other two set to take place in Cleveland, Ohio, and Buffalo, New York, in November. It will also be the first Canada vs. USA women’s hockey games to be played in Edmonton since 2017.
Women’s hockey has experienced a meteoric rise in recent years, thanks in part to the introduction of the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL). The league has set numerous attendance records for the women’s game and proved that the sport is more than viable on a large scale.
Edmonton hosted one PWHL game at Rogers Place last season, which saw a nearly sold-out crowd of over 18,000 pack into the arena. There is hope that the league will one day expand to the Alberta capital.
Until that happens, this will be the best chance for Edmonton hockey fans to get a look at the highest level of women’s hockey.
Tickets will be available starting on Sept. 26.
