Edmonton hair and nail shops must close to prevent coronavirus spread

The City of Edmonton has ordered all businesses that deal with personal appearance or body care closed to prevent spread of COVID-19.

Council decided Thursday that all “personal services shops” in the city should close. The order encompasses hair salons, nail salons, tattoo parlours, and body rub centres.

“Our priority during this difficult time continues to be the health and safety of the public. Everything we are doing is to ensure their safety,” interim city manager Adam Laughlin said in a news release.

The vote came a day before the province also required all non-essential businesses to close.

Council renewed the city’s state of emergency for another seven days at Thursday’s meeting.

Shopping malls and parks in the city remain open.
