Grab your pail and start looking at some pie recipes, because there are plenty of edible fruit trees to be found here in Edmonton.

Lucky for you, a map on the City of Edmonton’s website lets you see every nearby tree containing edible fruit.

Tens of thousands of trees can be viewed on the map, including apple, cherry, plum, pear, crabapple, and the delicious Saskatoon berry bushes.

Edmontonians are welcome to harvest as much fruit as they’d like, so long as they don’t damage or harm the trees.

Plenty of information can be found in the dataset, including the species, diameter of the trunk, age, height and location on public property, such as along a roadway, boulevard, or park.

This tree inventory also does not include locations of trees in heavily wooded areas such as the river valley and ravines, so if you are out for a stroll there looking for some berries through this map, you won’t find much success.

Fruit from City-owned trees should be washed thoroughly to remove any pesticides, other chemicals, and environmental residues.

Don’t eat any fruit or berries you have picked if you aren’t entirely sure of their identity.

The City added that citizens assume responsibilities for their own safety while berry picking.

With summer just around the corner, hunting for fruit trees all around the City of Edmonton could be a fun way to spend the day outdoors! Plus, all the delicious berries are the perfect reward at the end of your gathering session.

Happy foraging!
