Nobody was as happy about the Edmonton Elks advancing to the Grey Cup as Cody Fajardo was on Saturday night.

The 34-year-old QB was amped up after defeating the BC Lions 28-16 in the West Final in front of a raucous crowd of 40,182 at Commonwealth Stadium. Fajardo came up big for Edmonton in the second half, running in a touchdown in the third quarter to give the Elks a 16-9 lead, and then finding wide receiver Austin Mack with a pass to put the game out of reach.

Fajardo was emotional after the game and had a message for the people who were doubting the Elks all season, and called out a specific CFL commentator.

“We’re Grey Cup crashers. Everybody had their perfect Grey Cup set, and we had a different thought,” Fajardo said. “I’m so proud of this team. That is a helluva BC team; they made it really hard on us.

“Henoc Muamba said he trusted Nathan Rourke with the ball with the game on the line more than me, so that pissed me off. A lot of people doubt me; that’s the motivation I need. The guys in that locker room believe in me, and that’s all that matters.”

There was talk that Fajardo was contemplating retirement before re-signing with the Elks this past offseason. Edmonton was coming off another last-place finish in the West Division, and the QB admitted that he had some chats about joining the Nevada Wolf Pack coaching staff before he decided to re-sign.

He will now compete for his third Grey Cup title against the Montreal Alouettes in Calgary next week. His son couldn’t make it to the West Final, and his dad had a message for him after the big win.

“Hey buddy, you’re going to the Grey Cup,” Fajardo said. “Right before I left, he said, ‘Dad, can you win this game so I can go to the big one?’ That’s all the motivation I needed. To have my kids at the Grey Cup, it’s going to be an awesome time.

“My wife, I don’t lose with my wife in the stands; it’s pretty special.”

The crowd of over 40,000 fans packed into Commonwealth was the biggest of the CFL season and the largest for an Elks home game since the 2017 season. It was an amazing atmosphere and one that Fajardo and the rest of the Elks fed off to snag the victory away from the Lions.

The QB praised the Edmonton faithful for coming out in droves to support the team.

“This city turned out for us. It was so damn incredible and electric in this building,” Fajardo said. “I didn’t see [Mack’s touchdown catch]; I laid on the ground and listened to 40,000 cheer, and I knew that we scored there.”

Fajardo’s night wasn’t over there either. After the game, he was spotted sitting rinkside at the Edmonton Oilers game against the Vancouver Canucks later that night. He was shown on the Rogers Place jumbotron to applause as he supported the city’s other major professional team.

It was quite a night for the California native.

The Elks will travel down the QE2 next Sunday, where they will meet the Alouettes at Calgary’s McMahon Stadium for the 113th Grey Cup.
