A new screening area coming to the Edmonton International Airport (YEG) is changing the game for travellers, allowing you to pass through security without having to pull anything out of your bag.
Work is underway at YEG to upgrade all security lines ot the new CATSA CT X-rays. The updated infrastructure will do away with the need to take out laptops and liquids, gels, or aerosols from carry-on bags, making the screening process faster, more efficient and convenient.
The machines use advanced 3D rotatable X-ray images that make it easier for screening officers to analyze bag content and detect any threats. The current screening machines used by CATSA, Canada’s airport security authority, only use two-dimensional images.

The first screening machine is planned to be installed at the Edmonton airport by the end of this month, with all six lanes completed by March 2026.
Signage will be displayed in front of all lines or checkpoints that use the new CT X-ray technology. If there is no CT sign displayed, passengers will need to remove their permitted liquids, aerosols and gels, along with large electronics, from their carry-on baggage to be screened separately, according to CATSA.
In mid-March, the Calgary International Airport (YYC) also announced it would be adopting the new bag screening technology, in addition to a new, centralized domestic security checkpoint.
