The Canadian mixed-team short-track speed skating team has won silver at the Milano Cortina Olympics.

Courtney Sarault (Moncton, N.B.), Kim Boutin (Sherbrooke, Que.), Felix Roussel (Sherbrooke, Que.), and William Dandjinou (Montreal, Que.) skated for Canada in the final, finishing second to Italy. Belgium won bronze, while China finished fourth.

Florence Brunelle (Trois-Rivières, Que.) and Steven Dubois (Terrebonne, Que.), who helped Canada get to the final, also received silver medals.

“Throughout the day we stayed calm and confident as a team and just built each other up,” Sarault told reporters.

“It’s a good way to set the tone,” added Dandjanou, alluding to the fact that Canada is expected to contend for many medals in short track.

This seemingly always chaotic sport saw multiple crashes in the quarter-final and semi-final, which Canada avoided, winning each of their preliminary races to qualify for the final. Both USA and South Korea fell in the semis, nearly tripping up Canada as well.

Sarault, who is the daughter of former NHL defenceman Yves Sarault, got out of the way.

“I think I had my hockey senses come out there a little bit,” she said when asked by Daily Hive. “I played hockey in the past.”

This is Boutin’s fifth career Olympic medal, following a bronze at Beijing 2022, and two bronze medals and one silver at PyeongChang 2018. Dubois, meanwhile, collects his fourth career Olympic medal, after winning gold, silver, and bronze four years ago.

The other four members of the team each collected their first-ever Olympic medal.

This is Canada’s third medal of these Winter Olympics, and their first silver. Long-track speed skater Valerie Maltais and freestyle skier Megan Oldham have Canada’s other medals, both bronze.
