Canada could not find a way to end their FIFA World Cup group play on a winning note.

The Canadians played to a disappointing 2-1 loss against Switzerland on Wednesday afternoon in Vancouver. It wasn’t the result that Canada was hoping for, but they will still be advancing to the knockout round.

A loss against Switzerland confirms that Canada will finish second in Group B, therefore clinching their spot in the Round of 32. This will be the first time in Canadian soccer history that the nation will compete in the knockout stages of the World Cup.

Canada’s group-stage finale was a tightly contested match between the two nations, but it was Switzerland’s Rubén Vargas who struck early in the second half, notching the first goal of the game at the 47th minute.

Johan Manzambi then doubled Switzerland’s lead to 2-0 at the 57th minute, which wound up standing as the game-winner.

It seemed like the match had gotten out of hand for the Canadians, but they did not sit back.

Promise David breathed life into Canada in the late stages, coming off the bench and scoring in the 76th minute to cut into Switzerland’s lead. It took him less than a minute after coming into the game to make an impact.

The strike blew the roof off BC Place.

Canada would mount a late push against the Swiss, but could not find the equalizer.

Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau turned in an impressive performance, but his heroics were not enough to stave off the Swiss in the second half. His biggest stop came in the 10th minute, as he fended off a point-blank chance from Swiss forward Breel Embolo.

There was some expectation that Canadian superstar Alphonso Davies could make his World Cup debut against the Swiss, but head coach Jesse Marsch opted to keep him on the bench. It remains to be seen if Davies appears in Canada’s Round of 32 match next week.

It’s not the way Canada wanted to end their group play, but the team still has plenty to be proud of. This is by far the most successful showing the country has ever had at the tournament, and they still have an opportunity to make more history in the knockout rounds.

Canada will end the group stage with a 1-1-1 record and four points after previously defeating Qatar 6-0 and drawing 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Their Round of 32 opponent has yet to be decided, as they will face the runner-up from Group A. It appears that it will likely come down to either South Korea or Czechia.

What we do know is that Canada will no longer play in Vancouver, with their next match scheduled for June 28 in Los Angeles.
