Boston Bruins trade Brad Marchand in bombshell deadline deal

Brad Marchand appears to be on the move for the first time in his lengthy NHL career.

Based on a report from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the longtime Boston Bruins winger is being traded to the Florida Panthers. The package headed the other way in this deal has yet to be confirmed.

Marchand’s name had popped up in trade speculation in recent weeks, given the Bruins’ struggles this season. Things really started to heat up around his name last night, though the belief was that he was headed to a team in the Western Conference.

That wound up not being the case, as the Panthers, who had cap room to burn with Matthew Tkachuk on LTIR, have stepped forward and added one of the biggest players available to their roster.

Marchand is having a down year by his standards but has still managed 21 goals and 47 points through 61 games. Going to a Panthers team that is looking to repeat as Stanley Cup champions should help rejuvenate the 36-year-old, whose only Stanley Cup win came during his rookie season in 2010-11.

Marchand won’t make an immediate impact for the Panthers, however, as he’s currently dealing with an upper-body injury which he suffered during a game versus the Pittsburgh Penguins this past Saturday. The Bruins deemed him week-to-week shortly afterward.

Once healthy, Marchand — known for being a pest — will join a Panthers team that already has plenty of those in Sam Bennett and (currently injured) Matthew Tkachuk. Should the trio be healthy for the playoffs, this team could cause some absolute fits for opposing teams.

The Panthers currently sit first in the Atlantic Division and fourth in NHL standings with a 39-21-3 record through 63 games.
