Apartment searches tend to dip in the winter, but Edmonton has bucked the trend, becoming the second-most sought-after city for renters in Canada.

According to a new report from RentCafe.com, the city leads in favourited apartments and ranks second for saved searches on the site. Edmonton also stands out as the only large city by population in the top 10.

“Long known as a hub for oil and gas, Edmonton is also becoming a tech hotspot home to large employers, thus attracting both young professionals and families in search of job opportunities and more affordable housing,” RentCafe says.

“Its population is expanding, fuelled by both new immigrants and people moving from other provinces, many of whom choose to rent initially.”

The report noted that apartments in Edmonton have boosted interest from renters coming from cities like Calgary and Vancouver, as well as some from across the border.

Winnipeg was the top-ranked city overall in Canada, placing second nationwide for page views and favourited listings.

Victoria, Ottawa, and Halifax rounded up the top five.

Saskatoon, which previously held the second spot, dropped to 21st place due to an increase in available listings.
