First responders in Mayerthorpe, Alberta, already knew a Thursday afternoon house fire had killed one person.

But when they searched the home Friday morning, once the flames were extinguished, they found four more bodies. In total, Mayerthorpe RCMP say the fire killed three children and two adults.

The blaze broke out around 4 pm Thursday in the community northwest of Edmonton. By 1:30 am Friday, firefighters knew one person was dead inside. But they needed to wait until 9 am the next day for it to be safe for a more thorough search.

The home was completely destroyed, according to a news release from Mayerthorpe RCMP. Luckily, the flames didn’t spread to adjacent buildings.
