Here's what a $1M Edmonton home looks like compared to other Canadian cities

In the realm of owning property, the saying “location, location, location” is regarded as the three things that matter most when it comes to buying a home.

A million bucks is a lot of scratch and based on where you live in Canada, it may or may not get you your dream home.

We’re analyzing $1 million homes across the rest of the country and comparing them to the size, look, and feel of those matched to an Edmonton home of the same price.

According to the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA), the average Canadian house price in 2020 was forecast to be $531,000, meaning a $1 million home is almost double the Canadian average.

To scale, the CREA lists the average Edmonton home at $324,300 (as of February 2021).

Compare that to Vancouver and Toronto, where prices average $1,084,000 and $969,600, respectively. The lowest end of the Canadian spectrum is $224,785, in New Brunswick.

With that said, let’s see how $1 million houses vary across the country, compared to an Edmonton home.

Edmonton (Alberta) – 26114 Township Road 544, Sturgeon County, $1,000,000

Sitting on 68 acres with a double detached garage and a number of out-buildings, this bungalow offers a perfect places to live while you house horses or cows, or choose your next hobby. Only five minutes from St. Albert and 35 minutes from downtown Edmonton, it boasts country living without being far from the city.

The 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom home has had many recent renovations, and features a tree-lined, gated driveway. “Attached to the house was once an indoor pool,” reads the realtor.ca listing, “[that] has been converted into an indoor skate park.” There is also a double detached garage directly beside the house.

Laval (Quebec) – 1620-1626 Rue Notre-Dame-de-Fatima, $1,000,000

According to Realtor.ca, this 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom single-family home is part of a beautiful quadruplex built in 2002.

Buyers have the option of living in the main unit on two floors, or keeping the current owners in the building as tenants. The spot has a fully-finished basement with a separate entrance, space to park five cars, and a beautiful backyard.

Richmond (British Columbia) – 14 9551 No. 3 Road, $1,000,000

This spacious 3-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom condo is located with “easy access to the airport, highway, and downtown.”

It was built in 2016, has quartz counter-tops and modern kitchen cabinets, but very little land space.

Toronto (Ontario) – 48 Satchell Boulevard, $1,000,000

This 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom detached home resides on a pie-shaped lot with no houses behind it. The property has a large family room with a gas fireplace, a spacious deck and yard, and is close to a beach and the 401 highway.

Paradise (Newfoundland) – 13 Joshua Street, $1,000,000

This 4-bedroom single-family home sits on 9,000-square-feet of land, has a large entrance foyer, a kitchen with quartz countertops, an island with a wet bar, two ovens, a double door fridge and freezer combo, a butler’s pantry, and a gorgeous view of the bay.

Winnipeg (Manitoba) – 125 Autumnview Drive, $1,000,000

“Are you two families that want to live together but need your own space?” asks realtor.ca. “This is the perfect set up!” The 2,000-square-foot home is nestled between two $1 million dollar lottery houses, with a walkout basement that boasts the perfect in-law suite. The lower level has a self-contained kitchen, its own family room, two bedrooms, and a second laundry area.

The main floor has an open concept kitchen, oversized balcony with amazing views, and a huge master bedroom with a 4-piece ensuite and walk-in closet. A triple car garage and landscaped yard make the property even more desirable.
