'SNL' parodies Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen in Artemis moon mission skit

Just one night after the Artemis II crew returned to Earth on the heels of its historic mission to the moon, SNL couldn’t help but spoof one of the most talked-about events of the year — with cast member Marcello Hernandez taking on the role of beloved Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.

In the sketch, actor Colman Domingo, who made his hosting debut on Saturday Night Live this past weekend, appeared on camera as American astronaut Victor Glover, floating around the Integrity spaceship. He was joined by Mikey Day as Reid Wiseman, alongside a rather underutilized Sarah Sherman as Christina Koch, the first woman to journey to the moon.

American heartthrob Marcello Hernández was tasked with portraying our beloved Ontario spaceman Jeremy Hansen, the only Canadian aboard Artemis II.

After Friday night’s splashdown, many space enthusiasts were left feeling like something was missing. But that moon joy carried through the weekend thanks to the team at SNL.

“Canada slaps!” Hansen exclaims, floating weightlessly as he points to the patriotic patch on his uniform. Before long, an oversized Canadian flag drifts into frame, completely stealing focus while Glover struggles to record a heartfelt video diary about his day in space.

There were some genuinely clever moments in the nearly five-minute sketch, including a floating Pringles can that spoofed the mega-viral Nutella scene aboard the spacecraft. It also leaned into gross-out college humour, with gags like a large glob of snot drifting out of Wiseman’s nose and Hansen’s…member getting stuck in a vacuum.

Some viewers felt the skit fell flat, leaving comments on X like, “Even the laugh track sounds bored.”

While others loved it. “This skit was MOST EXCELLENT!!!! LOVED IT!!,” wrote one user on X.

Others seemed to have appreciated the Canadian representation. “Whatever’s Marcello doing with that Canadian flag, that’s us and heated rivalry, canada slaps!” wrote another X user.
