"People like me should probably pay more tax": Simu Liu slams Trump's tax plan

Simu Liu is speaking out against US President Donald Trump’s proposed tax plan.
On Tuesday, the Canadian actor candidly shared his thoughts on the presidential administration’s economic agenda with his 2.9 million Instagram followers.
He prefaced his thoughts by saying he’s not American, but he does live in the US and pays taxes.
“I read the new administration’s tax plan, and it looks like I get a tax cut. I guess I just wanted to say that I don’t need a tax cut,” said Liu. “I actually think that people like me should probably pay more tax.”
The Marvel Studios star seems to be alluding to well-off celebrities like himself.

According to inequality.org, a site run by the progressive US think tank Institute for Policy Studies, Trump’s administration is gearing up for another round of “massive tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy and corporations.”
During his first term at the White House in 2017, the convicted felon passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA).
Inequality.org reported that the law delivered a tax cut for the richest 0.1% of Americans. Research exclusively shared with Rolling Stone in September also found that the tax plan didn’t benefit most Americans but benefitted the wealthiest corporations and individuals, including the oil and gas industry.
For example, one of the provisions, made permanent, slashed the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%.
Many of the provisions under the TCJA are set to expire this year, which New York financial services company Bankrate says will allow the president to extend and potentially expand his tax policy.
The Shang-Chi star says the plan baffles him because it raises Americans’ taxes, most of whom voted for Trump.
“Their cost of living will go up, and it means that their income will go down,” he said in the Instagram story. “I’m just very confused because so many of these people voted for a president that will ultimately not act in their best interest.”
Trump was inaugurated as the 47th president of the US on Monday.
This isn’t the first time Liu has been outspoken.
In October, he went viral for critiquing Dragons’ Den entrepreneurs, accusing them of cultural appropriation. A month later, he defended a business owner who was criticized by the show’s investors for maintaining a full-time job.
