New or expecting parents may want to check their drawers after a well-known Elmo teether was recalled in Canada over a potential choking hazard.
In a joint recall notice with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and Skip Hop Inc., Health Canada has issued a recall for over 20,000 Elmo-shaped teething toys.
In Canada, the recalled product was sold between January 2025 and March 2026 through Carter’s OshKosh and various online retailers.
The Skip Hop Baby Sesame Street Elmo Silicone Teether is a popular toy for babies three months and up, as it gives them something to safely chew on as they explore new sensations and soothe sore gums during the teething period.

However, according to the notice, the black pupil portion of Elmo’s eyes can detach from the toy if it is frozen, posing a potential choking hazard.
“Immediately stop using the recalled product,” reads the notice. “Contact Skip Hop Inc. for instructions on disposal of the product and to receive a refund in the form of a gift card.”
As of Sept. 3, 2026, the company has received three reports of incidents involving the product in Canada, with no reports of injury. In the U.S., there has been one reported incident and no reports of injury.
