We’re in for a celestial treat tonight. A rare blue supermoon will light up the skies.

According to NASA, tonight’s blue supermoon is also known as a “Sturgeon Moon” or “Dog Moon.”

Experts describe the August supermoon as “unconventional.” It will be the month’s first full moon, whereas a Blue Moon typically refers to the second full moon in a calendar month.

So, does the Blue Moon ever actually look blue?

Space.com says it can sometimes happen “under uncertain atmospheric conditions.” And it’s happened in Canada, too.

The website recalls that on September 24, 1950, massive wildfires in Northern Alberta cast a pall over the Great Lakes, parts of New York State, and southern New England.

“The smoke produced an unusual midday darkness and caused the sun’s disk to shine in eerie hues of pink, blue, and even lavender!” it states.
