You can snag Princess Diana's iconic ‘revenge dress’ for your closet — but it'll cost you
You don’t need to be a fan of the Royal Family to agree that Princess Diana’s “revenge dress” is one of the most iconic pieces of clothing in history.
And now, one lucky — and very rich — Canadian could very well end up with it hanging gracefully in their closet.
This December, Princess Diana’s little black dress will be auctioned off for the first time in nearly three decades.
Why is it so iconic?
Well, Diana first wore the black silk Christina Stambolian midi-length gown to a Vanity Fair party in London in 1994. Earlier that day, her husband at the time, then-Prince Charles, would address his infidelity in a televised interview. Brutal.
So Diana did what any woman might do: she spoke with her clothes.
And this dress just screams, “You think you can cheat on me when I look this good?”

The world had its jaw on the floor when Diana first stepped out of the vehicle in this LBD, paired with a sapphire necklace, black pumps and sheer tights.
Those old enough to remember the front pages of the Sun may recall the big, bold headline: “Revenge is chic.”
It’s quite possibly Diana’s most photographed outfit, and it has been shared across social media and replicated countless times in the years and decades since.
Unfortunately, the princess never wore it again. She died on Aug. 31, 1997, at the age of 36.
The dress has cemented its place in the pop culture zeitgeist, and a life-size waxwork replica of Diana wearing it was unveiled at a Paris museum in 2025.
Now, the real thing is going up for auction at Sotheby’s, with a presale estimate of up to US$300,000, so we’re talking around C$419,700 given today’s conversion rate.
