Pierre Poilievre shares bizarre video attacking Trudeau government

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre shared a short film attacking the Trudeau government earlier this week.

On New Year’s Eve, Poilievre posted the 10-minute video on X titled “WACKOS: The Weird, wild, woke and wonderful world of the people running our country.”

“There seems to be an overabundance of wacko events in Canada these days, but who’s behind them?” a narrator reads amidst supercut clips of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his MPs.

“There’s probably nothing to fear from most wackos. They often serve as an odd form of entertainment. But what happens if they get into positions of power? What happens if they run a government?”

The video criticizes Trudeau and his current and former cabinet members, including Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, Health Minister Mark Holland, Minister of Environment Stephen Gilbeaut, and Minister of Labour Seamus O’Reagan.

It hones in on the Liberal government’s economic platform, referencing Freeland’s “vibecession” comment and her remarks suggesting Canadians cut Disney+ to combat the cost of living crisis last year.

It also claims that Trudeau has “no problem legalizing hard drugs” and says former health minister Carolyn Bennett was “the leading architect of creating government-funded opioid programs for addicts.”

It may be referencing the government’s additional funding to safer supply pilot projects in 2022, which provides prescribed medications as an alternative to the toxic illegal drug supply for people experiencing substance use disorder. The pilot projects also offer services that can help prevent overdoses.

The video also claims that last year’s carbon tax hike will increase prices. According to Statistics Canada, the tax has increased food prices by about 0.3% since its inception. A report from the International Institute for Sustainable Development last year suggested that carbon pricing did not cause inflation or hike gas prices. There is no new data on the impacts of last April’s hike.

Canadians reacted to Poilievre’s video on social media.

Some love the short film, calling it “brilliant” and “excellent.”

While others weren’t impressed with the Conservative leader’s tactics.

“Calling people names is incredibly childish. Grow up! You want to be PM of Canada, and yet, you behave like a spoiled five-year-old,” commented Marc Lévesque, the former chief economist at the Public Sector Pension Investment Board.

“Pierre Poilievre’s recent video labelling the Trudeau government as “wackos” is a classic case of projection. By accusing others of the very tactics he employs—such as divisive rhetoric and inflammatory language—Poilievre attempts to deflect attention from his own behaviour and lack of substance,” said Advocacy Canada founder and president Wilbur Turner.

“This strategy not only undermines constructive political discourse but also distracts from addressing the real issues facing Canadians.”
