Canada’s newest Mastercard is offering big savings at the movies, grocery store, and at the pump.

Tangerine Bank revealed its new Tangerine Rewards World Elite Mastercard on Wednesday. The Scotiabank subsidiary says its new premium credit card is designed to give Canadians more flexibility and value from their everyday expenses.

In addition to the new Mastercard, the bank is introducing Benefinder, a “first-of-its-kind” digital rewards tool that helps cardholders easily access their card benefits and have more control over the rewards available to them, so they don’t miss out on savings.

“Canadians aren’t always aware of all the rewards and benefits available to them, which means value can easily be left on the table,” said Michelle Butler, vice-president of lending solutions at Tangerine.

“That insight shaped how we built our new Tangerine Rewards World Elite Mastercard. With Benefinder, we focused on removing that friction point so our clients can see and use their available rewards and be confident that their credit card is working hard for them.”

Perks the new Mastercard offers

Avid moviegoers will get access to Scene+, one of Canada’s largest loyalty programs. According to Tangerine, cardholders will have no limits on Scene+ points they can earn from using their card.

You can earn 1.5 Scene+ points per $1 spent on three accelerator categories of your choice, selected from 13 categories spanning gas, groceries, drug stores, as well as lifestyle options like travel and fitness.

“Categories can be refreshed every 90 days — a well-loved Tangerine feature that gives clients control and keeps rewards aligned with their changing spending habits and lifestyle needs,” explains the bank.

For all other purchases, you can earn one Scene+ point per $1.

Once you collect enough Scene+ points, you can redeem them with key partners like Scene+ Travel powered by Expedia, Shell, Home Hardware, Rakuten, Cineplex, and Empire Company Limited brands, including Sobeys, IGA, Safeway, Foodland, FreshCo, and Voilà.

Cardholders will also benefit from savings at the pump. Available now in Canada and starting May 26 nationwide, users of the new Mastercard can unlock up to 10 cents per litre in value at participating Shell locations. All you’ll need to do is link your card to Shell Go+ in the Tangerine mobile app or on the website to get started.

Paying with a linked Mastercard will get you instant savings of three cents per litre on any grade of Shell fuel, an additional four cents per litre instant savings when buying Shell V-Power fuel, and up to three cents per litre in Scene+ points value when buying Shell V-Power fuel.

Tangerine says jetsetters will get premium protection with comprehensive travel and mobile device insurance, plus event ticket protection.

Additional perks include four annual complimentary airport lounge passes and exclusive access to the Mastercard Collection.

How Benefinder works

The new rewards tool is available exclusively to Tangerine Rewards World Elite Mastercard cardholders through the bank’s mobile app.

It brings together the credit card’s benefits and offers — including those from Sene+, Mastercard and Shell — into a single, intuitive experience.

You can apply for the new card on Tangerine’s website. It’s currently offering 30,000 Scene+ points as a welcome bonus.

For Canadians who are frequent flyers, another new Mastercard was introduced last week in collaboration with a major airline.
