Planning a vacation to Mexico? The Canadian government has flagged a potential safety risk in its latest travel advisory.

In less than a week, the Government of Canada has updated its Mexico advisory again, warning Canadians about another possible safety issue. In an update published on Monday, Canadians were urged to “avoid non-essential travel” to the west-central coast, from Punta San Telmo to Bahia Tempehuaya, including the Islas Marias islands, due to Hurricane Simon.

“Hurricane Simon is expected to sweep across the west-central coast of Mexico as a major hurricane, from Punta San Telmo to Bahia Tempehuaya, including the Islas Marias islands, before making landfall near Mazatlán on Oct. 15, 2026,” the update reads.

The storm could bring heavy rain and violent winds, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides. This could severely affect access to essential services such as transportation (including airport operations), power distribution, water and food, telecommunications networks, emergency services, and medical care.

The government is asking Canadians who are already in affected areas to exercise caution and monitor local weather reports and news. It’s also important to follow local authorities’ instructions, including any evacuation orders.

A U.S. National Hurricane Center bulletin states that areas North of Escuinapa to Bahía Tempehuaya and Las Islas Marias are currently under a hurricane watch, while regions from Cabo Corrientes to Escuinapa are under a tropical storm watch.

The latest warning comes soon after parts of Mexico were hit by Hurricane Simon on Monday.

Hurricane season in Mexico lasts from mid-May to the end of November in the Pacific, and from early June to the end of November in the Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico.

Tourists travelling to the area during hurricane season should be ready to change travel plans at short notice, monitor the latest regional weather forecasts, and keep emergency contact information for their airline or tour operator on hand.
