Retirees from the same region each $5 million richer after Lotto 6/49 win

Two Canadians from the same region defied the odds after winning the same Lotto 6/49 prize during different draws.

The men from the Montérégie in Quebec both scored massive prizes, each worth $5 million. According to Loto-Québec, winners Albert Rainville and Bernard Dupuis claimed their prizes on April 25.

“The Lotto 6/49 Classic Jackpot has been won six times in Quebec since the beginning of 2025, in four regions of the province,” states a release. “These prizes generate positive impacts in the winners’ communities.”

Albert Rainville had stopped for gas when he decided to pop into the Proxi convenience store. While buying a ticket, the retired construction worker had joked with the attendant that he’d gladly take a $5 million cheque.

The same attendant checked the ticket after the April 16 draw and discovered that Rainville’s joke had come true: he had won the $5 million Lotto 6/49 Classic jackpot.

“My eyes welled up a bit,” admitted Rainville. He shared the news with his wife and sons, and the family celebrated until 2:15 a.m. His three daughters initially refused to believe him, but they also cried tears of joy when they learned about their father’s good fortune.

Days later, the family showed up at the retailer where Rainville bought his ticket. He said the win would help him fulfil his dream of buying a pickup truck. He also plans to keep a promise he’d made to himself before he won: he’ll donate a portion of his winnings to an organization that helps women victims of violence.

The retailer will receive a one per cent commission of $50,000.

While Rainville knew almost immediately that he had won the lottery, for a whole month, Bernard Dupuis, a retiree from the printing industry, had no idea he was a multimillionaire.

Dupuis, who buys his ticket ahead of the upcoming Lotto 6/49 draws, didn’t know that one of his tickets was a winner. After scanning his ticket on the Loto-Québec app, he was surprised to see the result. In disbelief, he asked his spouse to confirm if she saw the same amount, and sure enough, he had won the $5 million prize during the March 22 draw.

While picking up his cheque, he said he would use his winnings to buy a new property and vacation in Hawaii.

The retailer will receive a one per cent commission of $50,000.
